Gin’s origins

Gin dates back to the 17th century, to a time when the Plague was rife in Europe and Dutch doctor Franciscus de la Böe—who was known for his plant-based medical potions—created a juniper-based drink to fight the illness.
The Dutch then used this mixture to cut the low-quality wine sold to England. The English rather enjoyed the result and ended up developing a taste for gin, going on to produce their own alcoholic drink from it.

Gin is now one of the most popular spirits in Britain and has made a strong comeback thanks to its extreme versatility. It can be served straight and in cocktails such as the Gin & Tonic, Bramble, Negroni and Tom Collins.
